What do you do when you are scared to…

chase your dream?

When you know what you want to do and

what you should do but that devil known as fear shows up?

I have this dream of writing and speaking and helping as many people as I can design a better future

but…(even as I write this fear pops up and says “who do you think you are?” “you cant talk about that everyone will think you are nuts” and about a thousand other vile things.) That is why I have to. When you have a dream it seems like the first and last thing you want to tell everyone about. If you share it then you have to own it. If fear can keep you from stepping up or standing out then it will never have to face the unknown. It can keep you right where you are.

So how do you get through the resistance? You press in. When you feel the resistance say turn and run, press in. Don’t avoid fear use it more like a compass to point you in the direction you should go. Dreams are emotional and there is a lot of emotional labor that will go into you realizing your dream. Emotional labor is uncomfortable and vulnerable and is the kind of thing Fear Hates. So the trick is to do the uncomfortable long enough and with enough passion for it to become a little more comfortable. Enviroment is everything so if you aren’t getting the results that you want look at who you are hanging around. Is the communities that you are a part of pushing you to become more? do more? dream more? If not then find some people that are going for it and you will find that soon you are doing the same.

Mind control Use it to win in business and relationships

1st rule to winning, don’t beat yourself. How often are we our own worst enemies? I believe the answer to that will surprise you. Today I want to share a few tips on Mind Control… Not the spooky stuff but how to begin controlling your own mind.

Now I don’t believe any of us are our own worst enemy on purpose,  so how do we sabotage  our own work without knowing it?

First do this experiment with me

When I say a word what is the first word that comes to mind,

Peanut butter reminds us of________

Jelly

The word dog reminds us of________

Cat

The word red reminds us of________

Rose, car or dress.

Monday morning reminds us of______

Work

Friday reminds us of_______

The weekend

These are all triggers and they can either help us or hurt us. If I think of work and the first thought that comes to mind is “I hate that place.” The likelihood of you ever doing exceptional work and getting a promotion or raise drops significantly. Same thing when you think of your boss. (Ouch)

Now I want to take it a step further. What is your first thought when you think of your spouse? “Irritating? I wish they would do this or that? Why do they never do what I want? Etc”

Our thoughts shape our attitude. What you think about your neighbor is your attitude towards them. What you think about your spouse is your attitude towards them. Our attitude helps us determine what actions to take, how often we take action and if we are positive or negative about it. And action is the ingredient that determines how our life turns out.

Jon Acuff in his book start talks about the voices in our head that whisper lies to us. When we want to do something that matters the voices get loud and tell us we can’t or we aren’t good enough or we don’t have the right background or skill and the list goes on and on. And if we listen to those voices we will never change or do the great work we are capable of. So to silence the voices he says write them down. The big voice seems really small when you put it on paper. But don’t just write it down refute it with the truth.

It looks like this.

Spouse (triggers) Uhg I don’t think they will ever change…

That’s a lie. Write it down. Then refute it with truth. All things are possible for those who believe. I sure do love her. He is going to be the man I know he can be. She is a great mother and loves us. Etc.

Work (triggers) I don’t think I will ever be successful… Lie

I can learn new skills. I am smart and creative. I can do great work. I just have to find a way and take massive action. The only difference between me and those who are successful is they took Action.

Changing your life, circumstances and the results you have been getting seems like magic but it is actually just controlling what you allow yourself to think and dwell on. Anyone can completely change their life because anyone can change their actions by changing their attitude. And anyone can change their attitude by changing their thinking.

What do you think about your job or neighbor or circumstances today? What are your triggers? Your lies? What do you need to start speaking life into today?

Do it and every area of your life can start changing today.

If this has helped you please pass it along.

1 tip to go from ordinary to extraordinary

I want to share a quick tip with you today that I believe can help you in every area of your life. I recently started asking the question, “What do extraordinary people do to go from ordinary to extra-ordinary?

What I noticed is extraordinary people come from every background and culture on earth. The majority of extraordinary people have more in common with ordinary people than they do with each other. Some grow up with both parents in the house some don’t. Some grown up in upper class America some in the slums of Africa. Some are given all the resources some fight for any resources. Some are healthy some are quadriplegics in constant pain. The point I want to make is extraordinary men and women come from every walk of life. It is not where you come from that determines if you make it or not, it is what you do. The opportunity to be extraordinary is given to everyone.

Every person who has ever impacted this world, by influencing or making a difference in the life of even one person, shares similar habits. This post is about one of these shared habits.

We make thousands of choices everyday and over time these choices become habits. These habits then shape and influence the majority of our lives.

Og Mandino wrote in ,The Greatest Salesman in the World, “I have surrendered my free will to the years of accumulated habits, and the past deeds of my life have now charted a course that threatens to imprison my future.”

This is an example of the wrong choices complied over years. The good news is, right choices (habits) accumulated over years can chart a course that will carry you further than you ever dreamed possible.

No matter how hard we study or how much we know without this habit you will not get anywhere. It is more important than any college degree. (That might get me in trouble)
Every entrepreneur has it and every business needs it.

It is the habit of TAKING ACTION.

Knowing is great but if you don’t develop the habit of taking action you will never DO anything. I know how to make a difference in my community but if I don’t start doing it my knowledge is pointless. Look at the extraordinary men and women who made America what it is today.

Our founding fathers developed the habit of taking action. Entrepreneurs like Edison and Bell took consistent action towards what they believed. Lincoln when it wasn’t the popular thing to do took action. MLK, JFK, Helen Keller, Steve Jobs all became american heroes by taking consistent action.

When given an opportunity to make a decision most people freeze. The decision not to act has much greater consequences than merely making the wrong choice.

Now, if you decide to say to yourself ,I’ll start doing things different tomorrow, that’s one of the normal signals of self-delusion; a person who can’t take action today to change something that needs to be changed won’t likely do it tomorrow either, and each day that goes by, the stronger the habit becomes.

Extraordinary people make decisions quickly and change their mind slowly and they take action. Ordinary people make decisions slowly change their minds quickly. Abe Lincoln said, “Good things may come to those who wait but only things left by those who hustle.”

Now, is the only time God give us to act. We can’t act in yesterday for it has come and gone. We can’t act in tomorrow because its always a day away. We can only change now. And when tomorrow gets here it will change its name to Now.
So don’t wait start taking action and watch your entire world change. Who knows maybe one day it will be your name that everyone uses to define EXTRAORDINARY.

Be blessed.

Why do cheap hotels offer free wifi and why do expensive hotels charge you for it?

Why do cheap hotels offer free wifi and why do expensive hotels charge you for it?

If I build a hotel just to earn a profit then it would only make since to hire cheap labor so that I can turn a greater profit. And because everyone loves New the business will run well for a while. But after a while workers start reflecting their leader and only work to earn a check and as a result service sucks. Which leads to less people coming back. And if service gets to bad then everyone shares how bad their experience was which means even less people show up. Then you have to find a way to get new people in the doors so that you can stay open. Result….

On the other hand if I see a need for a hotel and want to serve the people by providing a great hotel with a great staff that gets paid what they are worth. Then they make sure people have a great experience. Those people will then share how great their experience was and the hotel will always stay full. No matter what price you charge. And if you offer wifi it will be the best wifi on the market, that’s what your customers expect and what you want to give them. So you can charge for it or make it free. It’s really up to you.

It’s nice to throw something in for free because you can and you want to. It’s not so nice when you feel you have to throw something in for free to make up for poor quality or service.

Are you offering free wifi? Why?

Fear Forgiveness and Going to Far

Is it better to ask for forgiveness or permission?

Is it better to go to far or should we all go to the edge and then take a step back?

The real question is, Do we submit to our fears or overcome them?

I heard fear described once as
f-alse
e-vidence
a-ppearing
r-eal

Fear is that whisper that says “If you say that they will get offended. That is impossible. You can’t do that. Who do you think you are? Don’t give everything, you need something to fall back on if this fails. Etc.”

When these questions come ask yourself this:
What am I believing to be true that isn’t?

It’s like this. If I believe that failure is fatal then I will always fear it. But if I view failure as just another way to learn then I can say it sucks but now I know what not to do.

Falling is a part of life. Hitting the ground hurt but the pain of falling isn’t greater than the joy of running and playing so we learned to walk and then run.

Doing something that matters, something that makes a difference in the lives of others takes courage.
You jump and either fly or fall. No will say its easy. You will have to keep your eye on what it will feel like to finally fly in order to keep going after you fall a few times. You will have to make your mind up and say I will persevere without exception and then one day you will fly.

Then you will join the ranks of those who say “It is not easy but man it is so worth it. It is better than I could have ever imagined.”

You have to risk going to far to go far enough. It’s better to go to far and fly than to play it safe and settle for only dreaming of flying. There are always people who get offended. Ask forgiveness for wasting those people’s time and go share your MSG with everyone else who needs it.

The only thing we can control

There are a lot things that we can’t control.
Like when our lives begin.
The family we are born into.
The year.
The time.
The city we grow up in.
We can’t control the weather or the seasons.
And most of us can’t control when we die.

God gives us this one extremely important part of our lives to control.

Now!

How you spend each moment is up to you. You decide if you are going to be happy and enjoy the moment. You decide if you are going to build that new discipline. You decide if you are going to believe in your dreams. Are you going to walk the dog, sing a song, learn a new dance or pick up a paint brush.

How we spend the moments determines how our lives turn out. We can want a better future for ourselves or our kids but how we spend this moment this time Now will ultimately determine the outcome of our lives. Just like faith without works is dead so dreams without actions are merely instances of wishful thinking.

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: (Ecclesiastes 3:1 NIV)

If you know there is something that you need to do don’t wait. If you need to call someone do it now. If you need to thank someone do it now. If you need to pray do it now. If you need to play right now play. If you need to sing then sing.

These are some of the little things that we put off that become this huge burden that we avoid because now you can’t do all of these Now. You look at the mountain of small task left undone and instead of choosing to start with one you become overwhelmed and do nothing. If this is you then decide to become a person of action Now and live with purpose.

Use those times for what they are meant for and you will have a life filled with joy and happiness. And you will leave a legacy that will reach through time and impact lives from generation to generation.

You are in control of your NOW! How will you spend it?

From Passion to Profits. How to get paid doing what you love

In my last post How to find your Passion Purpose and Profit I asked 21 questions to help people find the answers to what it is that they truly love and enjoy and shared that they could earn money doing what they love. The response has been amazing. Within a few hours it had earned the top spot as my most viewed post ever!
Then I started hearing responses of people who immediately started taking action and were having amazing results and was blown away by the impact those simple questions were having on people.

Many people started calling and emailing asking how they could earn a profit in their specific field of passion. That is when I realized just sending someone to find a mentor or read a book wasn’t going to be enough that there were Questions that I needed to help answer.
Like these
“How can I support my family doing this? Will living off of my passion not kill the passion? Would knowing that I have to put more products out to make more money not force me to sacrifice quality and creativity?”

First I want to say that I completely understand and have asked these questions myself. Some this week.

1. How can I earn money doing what I love?
Norman Vincent Peale said,”There is a magic formula for success: No enterprise can succeed without it; any enterprise can succeed with it. Indeed, it can lead to success in life itself. The formula is stated six powerful words-short words, only three of them containing as many as four letters. They are these- and mark them well: find a need and fill it.”

This is the foundation of all Business.
Mixing your strengths and passion what needs can you fill? The answer is how you make money. And it might start with one thing and move on as your passions and strengths are more and more defined and refined.

2. Will living off of my passion not kill the passion?

Don’t quit your day job.
Although you know your passion now and your ready to be the next John Mayer or Seth Godin if you quit your job today chances of you making it nearly disappear. If you want a step by step guide to quitting I would recommend reading Quitter by John Acuff.

3. Would knowing that I have to put more products out to make more money not force me to sacrifice quality and creativity?

Start small.
This is the key. Most entrepreneurs see the big picture of what their business is going to be or can be. The goal is to navigate to that end not jump out of a plane and hope the wind carries us to that destination. You do this by starting where you are. The need that we found earlier, how can you meet that need for 1 person tonight or this weekend. Take action now. No matter how small.
You have to start somewhere. You can not serve thousands until you can serve one.

Once the income you make from your passion is large enough then you can make the jump without ever worrying about sacrificing your art or feeding your family.

Most people think you have to just jump out of the plane and hope everything works out on the way down. That’s why they never start but those who start wherever they can grow their passion and income together and when they are full grown they give birth to the life of our dreams.
